[edit] sipX Media Server Features

sipX open source PBX Media server provides three built-in applications – auto attendant, IVR, and Voicemail – and the related administrative features below:

[edit] Auto Attendant

Auto Attendant is a set of VXML scripts used by the Media Server to answer a call placed to the “general” corporate number. The default VXML scripts in the system provide the following:

  • Professional main greeting message
  • Prompts for standard Auto Attendant features with up to 8 key selections (any key except 0, 9, * and #) for specific phone numbers, such as Sales, Support, or Accounts Payable.
  • “Press 0 to reach an operator” escape route is available at any time in a call to an administrator-specified extension.
  • Dial by extension.
  • Dial by name, resulting in any number of selectable choices and an audio confirmation after selection that plays either the name recorded by the end-user or confirms the extension number if no name was recorded by the end-user.
  • Telephone User Interface (TUI) to customize top-level greeting.
  • Supports user configurable multiple auto-attendants

[edit] Interactive Voice Response

The IVR capability allows an Enterprise to build a call routing tree that directs callers to specific phone extensions within the system.

  • Easily customizable top-level IVR choices with no VXML programming skills required.
  • Specify destinations for the 1 through 8 keys; the 9 key is reserved for Dial by Name.
  • Designate any number of extensions or hunt groups for each top-level IVR choice.
  • Browser interface to select top-level choices.
  • Fully replaceable VXML scripts for more complex IVR requirements
  • Replace any of the VXML scripts with custom VXML applications
  • Use any commercial VXML integrated development environment.
  • Contact information for third-party voice talent used for the built-in prompts is provided, enabling extension of existing prompt suite with the same voice.

[edit] Voicemail

Media Server offers advanced voicemail capabilities.

Callers into the system can:

  • Hear a default audio prompt or a personalized announcement from each user.
  • Leave recorded messages.
  • Utilize post-message options, including review recording, save recording, delete and start over, cancel, and send to multiple mailboxes.
  • Escape to a designated operator extension by pressing 0 at any time in the call.

  • Customize and select appropriate voicemail greetings for various situations, including the standard greeting, out of office greeting, and extended absence greeting.
  • Receive visual notification of a new voicemail via the message-waiting light on the phone and a “new voicemail” message on the phone display.

  • Play and delete messages from any PC with audio capabilities or audio-playing application, such as Windows Media Player, Winamp, iTunes, and Real Networks Real Player.
  • Retrieve messages by dialing into the system from any telephone within or outside the system, with standard capabilities such as play message info, replay message, save/restore to inbox, delete, forward with or without comment, play next message, cancel, and empty deleted messages folder.
  • Forward voicemail messages when dialing into the system with or without additional comment to other users on the system.
  • Create re-usable message distribution lists that are directly accessible while sending a message using the phone
  • Utilize browser interface to retrieve and manage messages, mailbox options and greetings, and view details on, listen to, file, and delete messages.

[edit] Administration

  • Server functionality is provided via VXML files, which customers can modify or substitute to change system behavior.
  • Includes protection against “boomerang calls” by outside users.
  • Utilizes RFC 2833 for DTMF processing to eliminate the need for DSP cards in the server.
  • Backup of voicemail messages included in the automated backup management system provided by ConfigServer
