[edit] Downloading Windows Messenger 5.1
Microsoft offers different Messenger solutions with different capabilities and for different purposes. In particular it is important to distinguish between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger.
The version compatible with SIP servers that is described here is Windows Messenger 5.1 that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site. Installing Microsoft Windows Messenger is simple following the prompts of the installer.
[edit] Configure sipX using the sipX ConfigServer Web UI
Log into the sipX ConfigServer as superadmin and create a user to be used with Windows Messenger. The field User ID represents the relevant name that needs to be configured in Windows Messenger for login purposes later on. Ideally you choose a name such as User ID = messenger.
[edit] Configure Windows Messenger
After starting Windows Messenger, select Options from the Tools menu.
Click on Accounts tab. Under SIP Communications Service Account enter a Sign-in name in the format of a SIP URL (e.g. messenger@calivia.com or 192@pingtel.com). In order to work with the sipX server the SIP URI has to be a valid user of the sipX system. Enter the SIP URI of the user you created in ConfigServer to be used with Windows Messenger. Uncheck any other check box for either .NET Passport Accounts or Exchange Accounts.
Click Advanced button. Enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or the IP address of the sipX server (e.g. sipx.calivia.com or sipx.pingtel.com). Choose UDP as the preferred transport protocol used to connect to the server.
The configuration is now complete. After you restart messenger it should look like this:
Click on Click here to sign in. Enter your username and password that this user was configured with in sipX, where username is the User ID configured in sipX. If you are asked to setup a .NET Passport Account, then you have not disabled those accounts during setup - go back and uncheck all other accounts unless you want to use a .NET Account.
Messenger should now sign you in (register the client with sipX).
[edit] Using Windows Messenger with sipX
To make a call, click on the Start Voice Conversation link at the bottom of the window. Click the Other tab and enter a sipX extension number you like to call.
[edit] Presence Indication using Windows Messenger with sipX
sipX is not a presence server and therefore does not process any presence related messages using the SIP/SIMPLE protocol yet. Currently (release 2.8) sipX simply passes all presence related messaging through transparently. To demo this, you could open two Windows Messengers on different PCs and then add the SIP URL of one of them into the buddy list of the other. The presence status should now show correctly. But if you exit that first messenger and start it again the presence will not be updated.
